Sandra L. Dittmann

On Thursday, March 5, 2015, Sandra L. (Hosfeld) Dittmann, age 73, Watertown, surrendered this earthly life to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born Feb. 7, 1942, Sandie was the daughter of Arnold and Louise Hosfeld of Watertown and the last remaining member of her immediate family. Sandie often referred to March 1, 1942, as her true spiritual birthday when she was baptized and entered into the community of Christian faith. She married Daniel E. Dittmann on Aug. 1, 1964, in their hometown of Watertown. Sandie loved all animals and reluctantly leaves behind Sweep Pea and Shug Avery, her beloved Bichon Frises who daily tugged on her heartstrings. Her husband, Dan, survives her. Together they praised and thanked God for each other and His many blessings upon them. He brought them together as high school sweethearts, allowing them to remain the love of each other’s lives for 50-plus married years. Two special and dearly beloved friends, Ester Ann Flater of Lake Mills and Betty Lillge of Watertown, were Sandie’s constant comforters, confidants and beacons of hope. Many relatives and friends will be saddened by the loss of Sandie’s genuine smile and unaffected, God-fearing approach to life in this world. Included are a number of friends in the New York and Chicago areas where the Dittmanns lived and worked for many years. Private Christian graveside services were held today with the Rev. Karl Walther of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Memorials to St. Mark’s School Fund would be appreciated. Schmutzler-Vick Funeral Home and Cremation Service is serving the family. Online condolences may be left at svfuneralhome. com. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) This is the law and gospel — the very words of the one and only true triune God, Sandie lived by all her life. Sandie is now the recipient in full of His free gift for all eternity. Schmutzler-Vick Funeral Home and Cremation Service 500 Welsh Road Watertown.

Man of courage and wit, Gary Scholl worked to enjoy his life to the end

Gary Wayne Scholl was one of those people who went through life saying a glass was half-full, not half empty. He had a good sense of humor and a positive attitude, said his family and friends. He kept that spirit even after he found out last year that he had cancer and had about a year to live. "He was extremely courageous," said his daughter, Teri Steffen of Bloomington. "He never gave up. He was never scared. Never depressed. That was the kind of man he was. He was just very warm, positive, courageous." Scholl, surrounded by his family, died Monday in his Apple Valley home. He was 50. "He was a man who found a balance between his family, career and spiritual beliefs," said a family friend, Joellen Finch. "He did that with a mischievous sense of humor." Scholl work ed in sales for 13 years at Oscar Mayer Co. before joining American Fruit and Produce, which does business as Kraft/American, in 1976 as a meat merchandiser. He most recently was the company's sales director. "Gary was a super salesman and he was responsible for a lot of our sales growth in the past 10 years," said Andrew Montgomery, the company's controller. Scholl was also responsible for keeping people in good spirits on the job. "He was always ready with a joke," Montgomery said. "He was always up, and that rubbed off on a lot of us." Scholl was born in Milwaukee and grew up in Oconomowoc, Wis. He joined the Army in 1955 and was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. Besides Teri Steffen, he is survived by another daughter, Kathy Scholl of St. Paul; his wife, Diane; three sons, Kevin Scholl of Texas, Thomas Steffen of Inver Grove Heights and Timothy Steffen of Minneapolis, and a brother, Ken of Baltimore, Md. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at River Hills United Methodist Church in Burnsville. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Gary W. Scholl Memorial Fund.

James P. West Was There For Those Who Needed Aid

EUSTIS - James P. West was a generous man with a willingness to help anybody who needed assistance, said his son, James F. West. "Whether it was giving someone money or a place to stay, my father was there," his son said. His father, born in Watertown, Wis., moved to Eustis in 1991 from Green Lake, Wis., because he and his late wife, Chris West, wanted to escape the cold weather. West was an over-the-road trucker who crisscrossed the country in his big rig for many years. On Jan. 10, he was injured in an on-the-job accident near Joplin, MO. "He was getting ready to retire. That was going to be his final trip," from El Paso, Texas, to Plover, Wis., his son said. West, 62, died Saturday at a Joplin hospital from injuries he suffered in the accident, in which his partner drove off the road and overturned the rig while reaching for a cigarette, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports. West was ejected from the sleeping berth. About 15 years ago, he owned Green Lake Appliance Service, an appliance-repair business in Green Lake. After he taught Chris West how to do the work, she took over the business, and he returned to trucking. "He could make a good living on the road," his son said. West, an Army veteran who served in Germany for two years between the Korean and Vietnam wars, loved to travel. With his sister, Marge Reichardt of Watertown, he journeyed to Hawaii and Las Vegas, and took cruises to Mexico. Shooting pool in taverns and at home was a favorite pastime, and West had an annual pass to Walt Disney World. "He liked going to the different country pavilions at Epcot," his son said. Other survivors include his mother, Mina West of Watertown; father, Percey West of Watertown; and brothers, Donald West of Watertown and Richard West of Delavan, Wis. Hamlin and Hilbish Funeral Directors in Eustis is handling arrangements.
