Roger L. Block
March 19, 1939 - May 24, 2024
Roger Lee Block, age 85, passed away peacefully on
Friday, May 24th, 2024, in the comfort of the home he constructed 56 years ago,
surrounded by the love of his family. Roger was born on March 19th, 1939, in
Watertown, WI to Arthur and Marcella (nee Buntrock) Block. Roger was a graduate
of Watertown High School with the class of 1957. He was the first Watertown
athlete in history to become a four-time track and field letter winner.
Committed to service to his country, Roger enlisted in the United States Marine
Corps in 1958 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton and Camp Matthews before being
honorably discharged in 1961. Roger received Wisconsin State Senate recognition
this past August in conjunction with the Watertown Marine Corps League for his
continued service to the beautification of Aero Park. Roger continued his
education at the University of Stevens Point for two years before co-owning and
operating Black Top Service for twenty-two years. Roger then became a glazier
for Charles David’s and Sons, where his employment kept him from retiring until
his late sixties. Roger married the love of his life, Phyllis Hertel, on June
20th, 1964, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. Through sixty years of marriage,
Roger and Phyllis raised three children, Daniel, Charles, and Amy. Roger was a
podium finisher at the highest levels of competition, medaling in marathons,
world-class canoe racing and multiple top finishes in The Birkebeiner. Roger
started playing hockey as a child and continued playing competitively into his

children and grandchildren where Roger was a faithful supporter. Roger was bound
by nature and could, most days, be found on a tractor, behind a chainsaw, and
over a shovel in his garden. His expert marksmanship in the Marine Corps carried
over to the woods where hunting led to annual success. Roger is survived by his

Block

State Sen. John Jagler, from left, presents U.S.
Marine Corporal Roger Block with a state senate citation Saturday.
U.S. Marine Corporal Roger Block was honored
Saturday at the 18th Veteran Statue Dedication at Aero Park. Issac Block, from
left, Sherri Block, Sam Block, Charlie Block, Dan Block, Rhonda Block, Block’s
wife, Phyllis, Block, Josh Fischer, Elliott Clark, Amy Clark, Eli Clark, Alayna
Clark, Aden Clark and Carol Block helped Block celebrate his special day.
U.S.
Marine Corporal Roger Block was honored Saturday at the 18th Veteran Statue
Dedication at Aero Park. “He’s my right hand man here at the park,”
Bartelme-Schwefel Detachment No. 349 Marine Corps League Commander Gary Stueber
said. “If I don’t catch something or if our members don’t catch something here
at Aero Park, Roger Block will certainly find it and fix it before we know about
it.” Block, 84, was born and raised in Watertown. He graduated from Watertown
High School in 1957 and followed in the military footsteps of his two older
brothers, Tom and Lee, by enlisting in the Marine Corps March of 1958. Block
served until March 1961 and was honorably discharged. “People should appreciate
this park,” Block said. “It costs the taxpayers nothing. It’s really something
special to see the park being used by families and their children. It means a
lot to me.” When asked about how he felt about his name being added to the
veteran’s plaque at Aero Park, Block said it was honor. “It’s a privilege to be
recognized,” he said. “I am truly thankful for it.” If the addition of Block’s
name to veteran’s plaque wasn’t enough, State Sen. John Jagler (R-Watertown)
presented Block with a special citation from the Wisconsin Senate. “Roger’s
continued commitment to service and community is demonstrated through his
membership to the Marine Corps League, as well as his weekly dedication to the
beautification and maintenance of Aero Park; and Roger’s name will be added to
the veteran’s statue located in Watertown’s Marine Corps League Aero Park in
recognition of his dedication to the country and his lifelong community by
maintaining the values of all who served,” the citation stated.
