John Benjamin Harris was born December 20, 1830, in Jerusalem, Yates Co., NY, and died May 21, 1899, in Regal, Roseville Twp., Kandiyohi Co., MN, at age 68. Buried in Paynesville Cemetery, Paynesville, Stearns Co., MN. He is the son of Henry Harris of New York, and Eliza Travis of Connecticut. 

Sarah Ann Abbey was born February 22, 1844, in Clarke Twp., Newcastle Dist., Durham Co., Canada West, and died October 15, 1927, in Paynesville, Stearns Co., MN, at age 83. Buried in Paynesville Cemetery, Paynesville, Stearns Co., MN. She is the daughter of Nathaniel Abner Abbey of the Province of New York, and Mary Louisa "Polly" Nugent of County Cavan, Ireland.

Della May Harris Newman is in the center, holding one of her grandsons, probably Ernest Skoglund. Pearl Ann (Newman) Skoglund, Della's daughter, is on the left. The back of the photo says the woman on the right is "Grandma Newman." However, Matilda (Jarrett) Newman died in 1910. This is likely "Grandma Harris," in which case this may be Sarah Ann (Abbey) Harris. This photo was taken in 1924, two years before Della passed on, at her daughter Olive's house in Canada.

After the death of Sarah's father 1849 in Canada, her uncle Orrin took her to Sheboygan Co., WI, and from there to Fond du Lac Co., WI. In 1851, all of the Mary (Nugent) Abbey family returned to Canada, except for Wellington Abbey, who remained a resident of Fond du Lac until the fall of 1859, when he visited his mother in his native country of Canada, returning again to Wisconsin in 1861.

The 1850 U. S. Census taken on September 21, 1850, shows Henry Harris (age 46) born in New York is a Laborer living in Jerusalem, Yates Co., NY. Living with him is Eliza Harris (age 45) born in New York. Also living there are five Harris people, all born in New York: John B. Harris (age 20), a Laborer; Sarah L. Harris (age 16); Maria I. Harris (age 13); William Harris (age 8); and Bertha Harris (age 5). A Laborer was also living there.

John Benjamin Harris was residing in the Town of Lamartine, Fond du Lac Co., WI, when he enlisted November 18, 1863, in Company A, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, Wisconsin.

In June, 1912, Sarah moved to the city of Paynesville. Paynesville is located east of Regal in the south western part of Stearns Co., MN.

Living with her is her unmarried son, George W. Harris (age 50) born in Wisconsin, general farming, and one boarder.

The 1920 U. S. Census taken on January 29, 1920, shows William H. Harris (age 61) born in Wisconsin to New York-born parents is a widowed General Farm Farmer renting his farm and is living in Compton Twp., Otter Tail Co., MN. Living with him are his unmarried children, all born in Minnesota to Wisconsin and Minnesota-born parents except Benjamin was born in North Dakota: Ray Harris (age 25) a Telephone Office Operator; Cyrus Harris (age 20) a Farm Laborer on the Home Farm; Alisemon Harris (age 16); Benjamin Harris (age 14); Gordon Harris (age 12).

OLD RESIDENT PASSES AWAY

Mrs. Harris Passed Away at Home of Daughter in This City on Saturday.

Friends here were surprised to learn of the death of Mrs. Sarah Harris which occurred Saturday, October 15th, at 1:40 P. M. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ella Van Vorst, in this city. Although Mrs. Harris was 83 years, six months and twenty-two days old at the time of her death she had always been very active and spry and was ill only a few days before her passing. Sarah A. Abbey was born in Canada on February 22, 1844. In 1852 she moved to Fond du Lac and they lived in that city until the year of 1867 when they moved during the spring of the year to a farm about twenty miles east of St. Cloud, Minn. They moved to a farm near Paynesville in the spring of 1876 and being among the early settlers of that country, they helped develop and settle the town of Regal. Mr. Harris passed away on May 21, 1899. In June, 1912 Mrs. Harris moved to Paynesville and here she has made her home ever since. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Harris, eight of whom are living. The surviving children are William Harris of Deerwood, George Harris and Mrs. Ella Van Vorst of Paynesville, Ernest Harris of Regal, John Harris of Paynesville, Mrs. Walter King of Redwood Falls, Mrs. Alfred King of Bertha and Mrs. Ida Brewer of Detroit, Michigan. Four daughters have died, Ann, passed away at the age of 1 year, 10 months and Violetta at the age of three years. Mrs. Wallie Van Vorst (Elizabeth) died on July 26, 1914 at the home of Mrs. Ella Van Vorst in this city and Della, Mrs. Charles Neuman, died at the home of her daughter, Olive, in Canada on July 7, 1926. Besides her children she is survived by two brothers, Abner Abby of Grand Forks, N. D. and Frank Abby of Fairbury, Nebraska, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ella Van Vorst at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon and at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Episcopal Church of which she has been a member for a great number of years. Those acting as pall bearers were Hugh Burr, L. J. Foreman, Millard Carlock, Frank Brown, Paige Blaisdell and Dell Roach. The remains were laid to rest in the Paynesville cemetery. Those from out of town who were here to attend the funeral were Mrs. Walter King of Redwood Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred King of Bertha, William Harris of Deerwood, Charles Neuman and daughter, Pearl, of Velva, N. D., Mrs. Eugene Nickels, Mr. and Mrs. Longwell and Robbins and Lloyd Van Vorst of Minneapolis.

Foster residence, 2810 First Avenue, 8th Ward, City of Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN, and all three were born in Minnesota to Wisconsin and Minnesota-born parents: Allison J. Harris (age 34) a Manufacturing Inspector; Cyrus W. Harris (age 31) a Manufacturing Inspector; and Gordon G. Harris (age 23) a Manufacturing Machine Operator.
