Della Mae Harris was born February 18, 1876, in Minnesota City, Winona Co., MN, and died July 7, 1926, at the home of her daughter, Olive, in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, Canada, at age 50. Buried in Velva Cemetery, Velva, McHenry Co., ND. She is the daughter of John Benjamin Harris of Wisconsin and Sarah Ann Abbey of Clarke Twp., Newcastle Dist., Durham Co., Canada West.

Married about 1921 in Unknown, to Johan Emanuel "Emil" Skoglund: Born June 9, 1895, in Fryksande, Varmland, Sweden; Died February 9, 1960, in North Dakota (age 64). The back of the photo says the woman on the right is "Grandma Newman." However, Matilda (Jarrett) Newman died in 1910. This is likely "Grandma Harris," in which case this may be Sarah Ann (Abbey) Harris. This photo was taken in 1924, two years before Della passed on, at her daughter Olive's house in Canada. Olga Marie (Heggem) Newman died November 24, 2010, in Minot, Ward Co., ND, at age 96. Buried in Velva Cemetery, Velva, McHenry Co., ND.


Olga Marie Newman, 96, Minot, formerly of the Ruso-Velva area, died peacefully, surrounded by family on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at Trinity Hospital in Minot. Olga was born Oct. 25, 1914, at Hillsboro, the daughter of John and Anna Heggem. She was baptized in the Lutheran church in Hillsboro and confirmed in the Ruso Lutheran Church. She was baptized in 1971 in the Minot United Pentecostal Church and was presently a member there. She was educated in country schools. Olga worked as a housekeeper in Barton and worked for the threshers in the cook car. She married Ernest Newman and became a farmer's wife and mother, keeping busy with chickens, gardening and milking cows. She often interpreted for young Norwegian families. Olga was united in marriage to Ernest Newman on March 19, 1933, in Velva. They made their home south of Velva, where they farmed and raised farm animals. Six children were born to this marriage. Farming was started with horses pulling the machines. When tractors started to make the work easier and quicker it also posed problems when the tractor wouldn't stop when told to stop with a whoa. Olga and Virgil moved to Minot from the farm in 2006. Her loving family included Ernest, her husband of 38 years, one daughter: Eilene (George) Emly, Minot, five sons: Elmo (Alice Wetmore) Newman, Minot, Virgil Newman, Minot, Vernon Newman, Robert Newman and Harold (Jolene Kostenko) Newman. There are six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren. Those who have preceded Olga in death are her parents, husband, Ernest; sons, Elmo, Vernon, Robert and Harold; son-in-law George Emly. Olga was also preceded in death by siblings: Conrad, Ben (Marie), Hilda Halsengard, Agnes (Otto) Skoglund, Melvin (Olive), Joseph, Morris, Magnes (Barbara), Louise (Jack) Martin and Gladys (Leonard) Egerdal. Funeral: Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at 11 a.m., in Apostolic Faith Church, Minot. Visitation and prayer service: Visitation Monday, from 2 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., both at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Burial: Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Velva Cemetery, Velva.
