ALFRED KING CALLED HOME
After a lingering illness and more than six months of patient and painful suffering, Alfred King gave up the struggle last Sunday evening, September 8, to pass thru Glory's evening gate and walk in paradise. Mr. King was born in the state of Wisconsin, April 9, 1851, and at the time of his death was 78 years, 4 months and 29 days old. When but a child of two years he came with his parents to Goodhue county, Minnesota, and later moved to Paynesville, where he first met, wooed, and on December 29, 1884, wed his now bereaved widow, at that time, Miss Hattie Maria Harris. After their wedding they moved to Wilder, in Jackson county, later moved to Windom in Cottonwood county and in 1892 moved to Redwood Falls, Redwood county, where they lived for ten years. In 1902 they moved to Nimrod in Wadena county, where they lived for 5 years and then came to Hewitt and Stowe Prairie township in 1907, and in 1917 they moved to their present farm in section 28, Bertha township, where the end came as the above stated. There remains no doubt but that the hardships and toils of pioneer life so took its toll that when he became ill from the flu last winter, his system was too weak to withstand the strain and he finally had to surrender to the Grim Reaper. His death is the first in a family which consisted of father and mother and 13 children. He is survived by his wife, a sister and a brother. 13 children and 24 grandchildren. His brother, Walter King, resides at Redwood Falls and was present at the funeral, and his sister, Mrs. Nora George, of Velva, N. Dak., was also present during his last days and at the funeral. His 13 children are the following: Fred King of Verndale; Mrs. Jessie Lampley of Modesto, California; Benjamin King of Bertha; Ida Lahrmann of Oak Valley; Roy King of Bertha; Mrs. Ella Hanson of Detroit Lakes; Mrs. Hazel Jasmer of Granite Falls; Mrs. Emma Zutter and Sadie, Arthur, Ruth and Marjorie King of Bertha, and Mrs. Azalia McIntire of Brondon. The funeral was held from the Bertha Church of God on Thursday, September 12, with the Rev. J.C. Youngblood as the officiating Clergyman. W. H. Miller, Alvin Bishop and C. L. Fox of Hewitt, and Chas Cluhm, Wm Becker, and John Stork of Bertha, intimate friends and neighbors, acted as pallbearers. The remains were interred in the cemetery just east of Hewitt village and there laid at rest amid the scenes and among the friends he loved so well. All the immediate relatives except Mrs. Lampley of Modesta, California, were present at the funeral. " How sweet to sleep where all is peace. Where sorrow cannot reach the breast. Where all life's idle throbbing cease. And pain is lulled to rest."

Children living at home, all unmarried and born in Minnesota to Wisconsin and Minnesota-born parents, are: Roy King (age 37), a Hotel Manager; Sadie S. King (age 28) a Hotel Waitress; Ruthie King (age 22) a Hotel Waitress; and Marjorie King (age 15).

Living with him are: his widowed mother, Hattie M. King (age 71) born in Minnesota, and 5 years ago was living in the Same Place, and with 5 years of School; and his unmarried nephew, Raymond Zutter (age 20) born in Minnesota, and 5 years ago was living in the Same Place, and with 1 year of High School, a Hired Hand on a Farm.

Rites Today For Mrs. Hattie King.
Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at the Bertha Church of God for Mrs. Hattie King, 84, who passed away Monday. Rev Thomas Hall will officiate. Burial will be in the Hewitt cemetery. Hattie Maria Harris was born at Sauk Rapids, MN., Dec 20, 1867. The whole of her long useful life was spent in West-Central Minnesota. She was married to Alfred King, Nov. 29, 1883. They took up their residence in Paynesville and later moved to Cottonwood county and from their to Redwood Falls, MN. Mrs. King's later years were spent in and around Bertha and Hewitt. There were born to them four boys and eight girls. Her husband and two daughters have proceeded her in death. Mr. King having passed away in the year of 1929. Death came on Sept. 1, at the age of 84 years, eight months and ten days as a result of a stroke suffered on the Saturday before. Loved one and friends will best remember Mrs. King for her unselfish service to others and her strong faith in God. Members of the family who feel the separation deeply are one brother, Ernest Harris of Rosemont and one sister, Sadie King of Redwood Falls; Sons Fred, Ben, Roy and Art and daughter Jessie Lampley and Hazel Jasmer of Modesto, Calif., Emma Zutter and Ruth Hartung of Bertha, Sadie Sunde of Park Rapids and Azalia McIntire of Hewitt. Mrs. King leaves 39 grandchildren and 38 Great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the Domian-Anderson Funeral Home in Bertha for LeRoy King of Hewitt, MN, well-known by many in this area. His brother, FRED KING,had at one time been Verndale's milkman .Reverands John and Corrine Long of the Bertha,MN, Church of God officiated at the services with interment in the Hewitt Cemetery.LeRoy King. 78, died from a stroke at ShadyLane Nursing Home near Wadena on June 18,1971, A stroke suffered in 1951 left his right side paralyzed and he thereafter was confined to a wheel chair. He was born on February 27, 1893, to Mr.and Mrs. Alfred King at Windom, MN; the deceased never married. At the age of four he had a fall and broke both legs, rendering him crippled. Despite his handicap, he was a very active and hard working person. He was employed on his father's farm south of Bertha and later, with his brother, BEN KING, managed a restaurant in Bertha for several years. He later purchased a farm southeast of Hewitt and farmed with his nephew, Raymond Zutter, until his health gave out. His mother, Hattie King lived there also and kept house for them. Five sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. Brothers and sisters surviving wereMrs. Ray Lampley (JESSIE KING) of Modesto,CA; Mrs. Palmer Sunde (SADIE KING) of ParkRapids, MN; ARTHUR KING of Osseo, MN; andMrs. Wayne Mclntire (ALZALIA KING) of Hewitt, MN.
Azalia Pearl King was born to Alfred and Hattie King in Stowe Prairie Township, Todd Co., MN. She was united in marriage to Wayne McIntire in 1929 at the Bertha Church of God Parsonage. Azalia passed away at Shady Lane Nursing Home in Wadena. Azalia was a homemaker and she did catering for many years and worked as a cook at the Thiel Hospital in Bertha. She was a resident of the community for 90 years and spent several years in the Branson, Missouri area with her daughter Janice and family. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilt making, cooking, gospel and country music, crocheting and traveling. Azalia was preceded in death by her husband Wayne, her parents and 4 brothers and 7 sisters. She is survived by her 2 sons and 2 daughters and several grandchildren.
