GILBY - LOUGHLIN
A quiet, but pretty wedding took place at the Rectory of St. Anthony's church, on Monday morning, December 30, at 8:45 o'clock, when Mabel Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Z. J. Loughlin, of Drumheller, became the bride of Mr. William J. Gilby, son of Mr. John Gilby and the late Mrs. Gilby, of Rocky Mountain House. Rev. Father N. R. Anderson officiated, while witnesses were Miss Genevieve and Mr. Maurice Loughlin. After the wedding breakfast served at the home of the bride's parents, the happy couple left by train for the coast and points south on an extended honeymoon trip. The bride was engaged at school teaching in and around Saskatoon before coming to Drumheller four years ago, while the groom is popularly known in Drumheller as an implemeent dealer. William Reid Gilby writes:
Sisters Alisemon and Margaret Gilby were trained as nurses. William James Gilby contracted Tuberculosis in Toronto when he was 18. He was first sent to Dr. Tilden's in Kansas (you may have heard of his strange system cleansing theories) and then to Alberta to homestead for the clean air. The TB collapsed half of one lung, but in spite of that, he survived into his eighties. His sister Alisemon was the first to join him on his homestead, partly to nurse him back to health. Later his mother, father and other sister joined him in Alberta. His elder brother John (known as Jack) went to the United States.
We are very lucky to have someone like you who enjoys genealogy as a hobby. As you point out, there are many reasons why it is interesting, one being that it is a bit like doing detective work.
I have been interested in the Gilby family since about when I was 16. At that time, my two Aunts, Alisemon and Isabel, were still alive and my parents used to visit them every few years in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. It was these two aunts who passed on most of the old family photos to me, adding to those that my father had. Before my father and my aunt Isabel passed away, I asked them identify as many of the people in the photos as they could. That was most, but there are some that remain unidentified. In any case, Isabel identified Charles, James, George, Robert, William and Frank as uncles. I guess George must have been John's son, being born a year after the UK 1851 census was taken, and it looks like Robert, William and Frank were the sons of Charles, while Charles and James were John's brothers. However, the exact relationship of these men remains somewhat of a puzzle to me. I know for sure that James who eventually married Alisemon at about 69 was John's brother. Your investigations have helped clarify this tangle of relationships for me somewhat at least. On Frank's marriage certificate we see Charles and Mary as his parents, why no Elizabeth is mentioned seems odd, and you have identified his mother as Elizabeth Mary. Perhaps that is indeed the right answer. Or was the Charles married to Elizabeth different from the Charles married to Mary? Tantalizing questions! About the small pictures, I last sent you. They started out as digital photos I took of the original photos. I then enhanced them with photo software and converted them to greyscale. Then I downsized them as I thought you would prefer them that way for the website. I can send you the original digital photos if you would like. I am attaching a photo of John Gilby's house in Oakville and picture of William Young and Margaret McIntosh who were Elsie Reid Young's parents, with original and greyscale versions so you can see what I was up to.
