WHEN WOMEN MIX IN THE STRIKE
At Sioux City, the packinghouse strike became a question of family and neighborhood politics, and when the women got into the argument the courts were appealed to. Thomas A. Faith had Mrs. O. E. Blake arrested and wanted her bound over to keep the peace. "It's all because of the strike, your honor." said Faith, as he explained to Judge Page in the police court why Mrs. Blake should be called to account. "You see, Blake is a union man and quit work with the rest of the strikers. I stayed at work because I didn't belong to the union and was getting good money. And say, that Mrs. Blake is a monstrous woman. She weighs 208 pounds. If she don't quit coming over into my yard and scaring my wife I don't know what will happen. "You see, Mrs. Faith is a 100-pounder, and when Mrs. Blake sails into our yard and calls my wife names Mrs. Faith gets scared. Why, my six-year-old kid has been called a 'scab,' and him knowing nothing about union labor. We don't dare leaving the house alone any more for fear Mrs. Blake will pull up our tomato vines and mow down our sweet peas. I tell you this strike is an awful thing."

Stockman Boy Is Accused of Slapping Blake Girl.
The disturbing of the peace case against Charles Stockman, the 12 year old son of Chas. Stockman, was dismissed in the police court yesterday morning. O/. E. Blake hadf filed the information against the boy, accusing him of slapping his little daughter. Blake told Judge Page he had asked the boy's father to make his son behave, but the warning brought no results. He said that the other day young Stockman met his daughter on her way to the grocery store and slapped her, knocking her down. The elder Stockman said he would not admit that his son had ever touched so much as a hair of Blake's daughter's head, but to avoid further trouble and to secure the dismissal of the case, he would promise to see that his son would not harm the girl in the future.

FINDS PARENT AND MERCY.
Youth Meets Father After Long Separation - Discovery Made in Jail.
Sioux City, Aug. 21. - Herbert Blake, 21 years old, has found his father, whom he had not seen since infancy. He has been reunited to his mother, whose home in Mississippi he had left. Having been provided with a family "out of the clear sky," it is likely that Blake will also find leniency from court officials, before whom he appeared on a charge of stealing $36 from a farmer near Moville who had employed him. Discovery of his father by Blake was made during the young man's confinement in the Woodbury county jai awaiting court action. He glanced thru the pages of a city directory, by way of pastime. Out of curiosity he looked for the Blakes. One of those recorded was E. O. Blake, 2642 South Cleveland street, Morning Side. Dimly Blake recalled that the initials were like those of his father. On impulse the prisoner wrote the Morning Side man a letter. They met a day later in the jail. The lad showed the older man a picture of his mother. The relationship was established. The Sioux City Mr. Blake recognized the picture as that of his former wife, from whom he was divorced when Herbert was six months old. A telegram was sent to young Blake's mother in Mississippi. She, too, came to Sioux City to see her son. Thru their intercession the employer of young Blake, who made the theft charge against him has taken a friendly interest in the lad. Efforts are afoot to parole Blake. A few days ago he pleaded guilty to breaking into his employer's home, and was sentenced to serve five years in the Anamosa reformatory. It is likely this sentence will be suspended. The Blakes lived at Ida Grove before they were divorced. Young Blake was born there.

Jack "Smitty" Smith, 78, of Panama City, Fla. died Thursday, February 17, 2011. Mr. Smith was born June 4, 1932 in Sioux City, Iowa son of the late Rex Alvin Smith and Clara Evelyn Schlosser Smith. He was a pilot for the United States Marine Corps and served as a flight instructor at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. Jack was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal for service during the Korean War. After leaving active duty in December of 1957 he worked for a short time in the banking business. Never one to take to being a desk jockey, it did not take long before he decided that he needed to be flying again. So Jack then took on a career with the CIA in an organization known as Air America. He flew with Air America in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Jack received distinction for his time with Air America in 1994 when he was inducted into the Gathering of Eagles along with Chuck Yeager and other exceptional aviators. After leaving Air America in the early 1970's he returned to the banking business to become a bank president in Gainesville, Fla. and then Ocala, Fla. Upon leaving banking again he decided to move to Panama City and open a barbecue restaurant that would later become known as Smitty's. He was the founder and original owner of Smitty's BBQ, where he became known for his service to the local community through his business. Smitty was always active in the community, often speaking in local churches about his commitment to Christ and at various community events about his aviation adventures. While he loved his Lord, family and friends, he was at his best when he was in a plane flying. We will miss you, but always remember the great memories you gave us. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his daughter, Valerie Smith and sister, Marilyn Holmes. Survivors include his two sons, Todd M. Smith and his wife Dawn of Aliso Viejo, Calif. and Scott C. Smith and his wife, Tammy of Panama City, Fla.; one sister, Betty Lou Smith of Tallahassee, Fla. and one brother, Harold A. Smith and his wife Jan also of Tallahassee, Fla.: three grandchildren, Reagan, Keegan and Sarah; nephew, Bryan Smith and his wife Denise of Tallahassee, Fla.; niece Lisa Shirley and her husband Sawyer of Atlanta, Ga.; stepson Daniel Johnston and his wife, Charon and son, Jack of Panama City, Fla.; numerous family members and friends. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 10 a.m. in the Southerland Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rob Woodrum officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Panama City Rescue Mission at www.pcrmission.org.
