Typology of Classical Pentecostalism in Africa, 1901–1960

Case Study: Clyde Tolliver Miller

As was mentioned earlier, the trail of ferment in African Christianity in this period includes the emergence of Pentecostal spirituality from external sources in the period between the years 1901 and 1960.This excludes a Keswick-type of evangelicalism that flourished among university students in Britain and was spread to many parts of Africa by university men and women who served as missionaries, doctors, schoolteachers or colonial government officers. First, there were some missionaries who expected that speaking in tongues might short-circuit language training. They were sorely disappointed. The resourceful missionaries changed tack; the frustrated ones returned home. Second, some missionaries were poorly funded solo entrepreneurs like Clyde Toliver Miller. Miller was associated with a city Pentecostal mission in Des Moines, Iowa, run by evangelist Robert Waldron and his wife, Vivian. They had come from Topeka, Kansas, where  they received Holy Spirit  baptism in 1897. A Mrs. Sturges served as the assistant and Clyde Miller later married her daughter. Without preparation or adequate funds the newlywed Miller left for Kisumu in Kenya in 1907 to work with the Nilotic Independent Mission. Later, Miller discovered that there was a huge tract of land available among the Nyag’ori people. But because it was a crown land, he needed the backing of an organization to acquire it. Some members of the church in Des Moines quickly formed an ‘‘Apostolic Faith Mission, Nyang’ori,’’ and a business laymember, John Buckley, provided the money for the acquisition. Trouble started in 1911 when Vivian Waldron and the Buckleys sailed out to join the Millers in the belief that Clyde Miller was their missionary partner and representative. But Miller had registered  the 109 acres of land in only his name. In the course of a struggle for the leadership, John Buckley died. Buckley’s widow and Vivian Waldron returned to the United States, along with Miller’s wife and son. Mrs. Miller refused to come back to Africa, while Miller soldiered on resourcefully through twenty years in the Nyang’ori mission field, and tried to integrate himself into the culture of the people by marrying a Kenyan convert. Three facts ruined his mission: the prospective Kenyan in-laws (trusted members of his church) dreaded the implications of an interracial marriage on the kinship system, yielded to the taunts of their neighbors, and refused to allow the marriage. This broke his heart. Second, the First World War disrupted his enterprise. And third, he changed doctrines during a furlough and came back teaching Oneness Apostolic doctrine that caused a schism in the church. He subsequently left Africa in despair.

In September, 1913, Lila Miller (age 22) and son, Cleophas Miller (age 2) arrived in the Port of New York.
