Mrs. Ann Hounsel spent two weeks in Cuba City lately, and while there attended the funeral service of Rev. A. C. Halsey, who died Sept. 10, 1900, away from home, but was brought home to Cuba City for interment. He was not only highly esteemed by his church people; he was beloved by all who knew him, and his early death causes deep sadness in many hearts. He leaves a loving wife and six children to mourn their loss, and a very great number of friends will mourn with them. He had gone south for his health, but death came. His beautiful and useful life on earth is ended. Not his good work, for that goes on forever! There was a very large attendance at the funeral, as might be expected, for he is well-known. Robert Foster Halsey died 1952.

George Halsey was drafted on 26 Sept 1864.  He was part of the 16th Wisconsin Infantry.  Company B. He died in a military hospital in South Carolina of "nostalgia".

These conditions contributed to what Civil War doctors called “nostalgia,” a centuries-old term for despair and homesickness so severe that soldiers became listless and emaciated and sometimes died. Military and medical officials recognized nostalgia as a serious “camp disease,” but generally blamed it on “feeble will,” “moral turpitude” and inactivity in camp. Few sufferers were discharged or granted furloughs, and the recommended treatment was drilling and shaming of “nostalgic” soldiers—or, better yet, “the excitement of an active campaign,” meaning combat.

REV. ALONZO CHARLES HALSEY

(1860-1900)

ALONZO CHARLES HALSEY was born October 3, 1860 to the farm family of GEORGE W. and HULDAH (RICHARDS) HALSEY of Henrietta township in upper Richland County, Wisc. George Halsey was born in New York State. Huldah came from Bloom, Wisc. and was married to George on Mar. 25, 1858. Huldah's parents were JAMES AND RACHEL RICHARDS. The Richards family had migrated to Wisconsin from Indiana. To George and Huldah were born two other children: Eugene in 1859 and Ida in 1862-63.

By 1865 George Halsey had died and Huldah (also known as Holiday) had remarried to Isaiah Monroe Frye. To the Frye family were born two children: Alvin in 1867 and Albert in 1868. The Fryes lived with their five children on a farm in Orion township, in southern Richland County.

In 1880 when Alonzo was 19 years old, he was listed in that year’s census report as a farmer (head of household) in Orion township, with his sister Ida keeping house for him. Also living with them at that time was a cousin by the name of Luzerne Pugh.

Living nearby in Eagle township, during the mid-1800s was the family of JAMES ANDREW SHARP. The Sharps had arrived in Wisconsin by way of Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana. Mrs. Sharp had been the Miss INDIANA FRANCES PRIVETT, born in Indiana on Nov. 1, 1840. The Privett family had come to Indiana from South Carolina and Virginia. James and Frances Sharp had thirteen children. The fourth child born to them on January 9, 1865 was named KATHRYN. Other children were George, Sonora, Henry, Mary, Elizabeth (deaf-mute), Lulu E., Eda E. William, Thomas L., James F., Earl, and Jennie.

On April 30, 1883 Alonzo Halsey and Kathryn Sharp were married at the Christian Church in Richland Center, Wisc. by Rev. John Walworth. They then settled on a farm in Orion township, where their first children were born: Salome in 1883 and WINIFRED MAY BELL on May 1, 1884. Salome died in 1886 at the age of three years and was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery north of Orion. The other five children born to Kate and Alonzo were George, Eva, Fannie, Grace, and Robert (born Jan. 19, 1898).

Alonzo had applied as Licentiate Preacher in the Methodist Church in 1886 and he preached from that time on but was not ordained as an Elder in the Church until Sept. 17, 1893. In January of 1900 Alonzo contacted tuberculosis and eventually went to the tuberculosis sanitarium in San Antonio, Texas for treatment. It was here in Texas that he died on Sept. 10, 1900. From the West Wisconsin Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church comes the following obituary, published in the minutes of the annual session held Sept. 12-17, 1900.

MEMORIAL

REV. A. C. HALSEY

Rev. A. C. Halsey was born October 3, 1860, at Henrietta, Richland County, Wisconsin and died at San Antonio, Texas, Sept. 10, 1900. He was married to Miss Kate Sharp, May 30, 1883, and settled on a farm. In the winter of 1885-6 he was thoroughly converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church and was actively engaged in the Master's work until the day of his death. In 1886 he entered the university and two years later was received into the West Wisconsin Conference. He served the following charges: Mt. Horeb, Wauzeka, Mt. Sterling, Leon, Springville, Prairie du Chien, Bloomington, and in 1896 was stationed at Cuba City, his last charge. In January of this year, Brother Halsey's health failing, he journeyed to California with the hope of regaining his strength. But it was all in vain, his life's work was almost done and though he made a desperate struggle for life he grew weaker and weaker until finally on September 10, he crossed the river to the Beautiful City. During this final illness he was visited by a brother pastor and to him he said: “It is all well, Jesus is precious to my soul,” and a little later he fell asleep. Brother Halsey was a noble character, one esteemed by all the brethren. Earnestly and faithfully he wrought to do the Master's will and the many souls that will shine in his crown, attest his success. He has left a widow and six children to the care and love of the church.

Cuba City News:

Memorial services were held in the M.E. church Sunday Sept. 16th. Rev. Will Mitchell led in prayer and Rev. R. Pengilly of Fennimore, delivered a very able and fitting sermon. The church was filled to its utmost capacity, with all classes who came to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased pastor. He had no enemies and was much respected by all. The little church was beautifully arranged for the occasion. Just in front of the pulpit was a large likeness of the deceased pastor, the frame of which was covered with crepe. The front railing and pastor's chair were also draped, and on either side were tables with black coverings upon which were and abundance of beautiful flowers and choice potted plants.

And from the Presiding Elder's Report, in the minutes of the 1900 Session of the West Wisconsin Conference comes the following note:

Bro. A. C. Halsey who returned to Cuba City at the close of our last session of annual conference was compelled in January to give up his work because of illness and went to Mexico for his health. Later he went to Southern California, and recently attempted to go to Texas in a courageous struggle for life. Little is known beyond this point regarding him save a few brief telegraph dispatches saying he was very low, and the last one saying he had died at San Antonio, Texas, four o'clock last Monday morning. His wife had, on the Saturday previous to his death, started to go to him. He of course died before she could reach him. His body will be brought to this state for interment. During the past nine months we have kept his work regularly supplied by the kindness of local preachers and the pastors of the district and Bro. Halsey has received all but $100 of his salary for himself and family. Bro. Halsey was a most worthy brother, who lost his health in over work, preaching four times a Sunday last year. His heart was in his work. He dies in the prime of life, being about forty years old. He leaves a wife and six children, the eldest being a girl sixteen years old and the youngest a baby about a year and a half old. Surely here is a brother pastors’ family that will receive the prayers of us all. Our Sympathy I know goes out to the widow and the fatherless children. We confidently trust the conference stewards will find it in their power to deal handsomely and generously with them in the distribution of the funds at their disposal.

The History of the Cuba City Methodist Church was published in 1951 and from this we have:

A. C. HALSEY
1896 -1900

We had in Alonzo C. Halsey an ardent temperance worker as well as a capable preacher. He and his wife enjoyed singing duets and in this way they gave many convincing temperance messages. Unfortunately while still actively in our service, he was obliged to go to San Antonio, Texas, for his health. He. died before his return, September 10, 1900. Forty was an early age to give up a career of high aspirations and bright promise of fulfillment. Our church has a memorial window dedicated to his honor. His daughter, Mrs. George KcNett, made a contribution for a "Veteran of the Cross Marker" to show her regard for his fine qualities. He is buried in the Mount Pleasant cemetery in Cuba City. He was highly regarded by all.

When Alonzo died his body was shipped back to Galena, Ill by train. His oldest daughter Winifred (16 years) with a wagon and driver (James Harker) meet the train in Galena and brought his body back to Cuba City. He was buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Cuba City. The following verse is etched in the stone above his resting place:

"He has gone from his dear ones,

his children, his wife,

whom he willingly toiled for

and loved as his life.

Oh God: How mysterious and

how strange are the ways,

to take from us this loved one,

in the best of his days."

Kathryn was left with Winfred and five other small children at home. Life must have been very dismal for her at this time. In 1903 Winifred married GEORGE McNETT and in 1908 Kathryn herself remarried. Her second husband was Jesse Scott. Kathryn became well known by friends and family as 'MA" Scott. Also known lovingly as a “character.” She died June 6, 1943 at age 78. She is buried next to her first husband.
