KILLED IN ELEVATOR ACCIDENT
Mrs. Nona Mount-Blake Met Almost Instant Death in Accident - Body Brought Here for Burial
The body of Mrs. Nona Mount-Blake who met death in an elevator accident at Kansas City Tuesday evening, was brought to Higginsville Thursday morning and taken to the home of her sister, Mrs. R. M. Sebastian on Fair Ground avenue. Funeral service will be held at the Second Baptist church Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. J. Smith. Burial will be made in the city cemetery. Deceased formerly lived here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mount. She was a sister to Mrs. R. M. Sebastian and Mrs. Fred Newman of this place, and there are also four other sisters, namely, Mrs. Fred Morgan and Mrs. Joe Jones of Corder; Mrs. Edward Stamm, Kansas City; Mrs. W. B. Harris, Smithville, Mo., and one brother, Wm. Mount, Kansas City, who survive her. The Kansas City Star Wednesday morning contained the following account of the accident:
Mrs. Nona Blake, 24 years old, was fatally injured by an elevator on the sixth floor of the Graphic Arts Building, Tenth and Wyandotte streets, late yesterday. Her neck was dislocated and body crushed. She died thirty minutes later at the Emergency Hospital. How Mrs. Blake met her death perhaps never will be known. None saw the accident. The cage passed the safety trip on the sixth floor and was held. The operator - known as, "Red," whose other name was not known even to John H. Thompson, Jr., manager of the building - had gone to the seventh floor to release the cage. It was lowered about three feet, according to Mr. Thompson. He said it seemed that Mrs. Blake had opened the shaft door that she might see what had caused the cage to stop. It was then the cage was lowered that the accident happened. The version of the accident told by William N. Campbell of the Campbell-Gates Printing Company, who employed the young woman, differed from that of the building manager. He declared that Mrs. Blake must have been leaving the elevator when the accident happened. That fact, he said, was evinced by blood at the top of the steel door entering the shaft. The elevator formerly was a fireman at the building, it was stated. He was working "extra" on the elevators. Mrs. Blake was a widow. She lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Mount, 1120 Virginia Street. Besides her parents she is survived by a son, Herbert, 2 years old, a brother, William Mount, 1242 Penn street, and six sisters, one of them Mrs. Edward Stamm, 1120 Virginia Street.
