OVER HIS DEPTH

CLYDE LEANDER WAS DROWNED IN THE NEOSHO RIVER YESTERDAY EVENING.

WAS IN SWIMMING

With His Uncle, Jim Ward and Several Boys - Had Started For the Bank and Stepped into a Sink Hole - Brought Home Yesterday Evening.

One of the saddest accidents that has happened in the vicinity of Parsons for a number of years, was enacted at Montana yesterday evening. Clyde Leander, the 12-year-old son of Conductor and Mrs. Carl Leander who reside at 1904 Morgan avenue was drowned in the Neosho river yesterday evening about four o'clock, about 12 miles south of this city. His parents were notified and the body was sent to Parsons on the Joplin train which arrived at 8 p. m. Clyde went to Montana a few days ago to visit his uncle, Jim Ward, who runs a grocery store at that place and also to get a pet squirrel which his uncle was saving for him. While there, he like every other boy, wanted to go in swimming and together with his uncle and a number of small boys he went to the Neosho river nearby. Mrs. Ward kept the store while her husband was away with the boys. After they had been in the water for a while Mr. Ward climbed to the bank and all the boys except Clyde left the water and commenced to dress. Mr. Ward called to get out and dress and he answered "all right," and started for the bank, but before he had proceeded but a few steps he stepped into a sink hole and went out of sight. Mr. Ward was not a good swimmer and before he could render any assistance, the lad was doubtless dead. Word was sent to the store as soon as possible and a doctor was ordered called. Dr. Henderson of Labette City was in the store when the message was received and hurried to the scene, but too late as the boy was past any possibility of recovery. His body was found in the bottom of a deep hole in which he stepped when attempting to reach the bank. Clyde Leander was 12 years old and was one of the most promising lads in the city. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Leander, are grief stricken over the accident and loss of their son. At the time the message was received in this city, Mr. Leander was out of town but was telegraphed for and returned this morning at four o'clock. The funeral will be conducted from the house at 1904 Morgan avenue tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Pile of the Christian church officiating.

Clyde Leander was 12 years of age and as good a natured boy as could be found in the city.
