Mr. and Mrs. Lee Abbey accompanied by Mrs. Bess Babcock of Fairbury, left for Glendale, Wyoming, Tuesday evening to attend the funeral of Onnie Abbey, who passed away at a Wheatland hospital Monday night. The Abbeys went after Mrs. Babcock Tuesday afternoon. Onnie Abbey was a brother of Mrs. Babcock and Lee Abbey.

The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary sent a potted poinsettia to the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island to be placed in the hospital chapel. At the Christmas party Dec. 21 with the DAV, canned food will be collected for a needy veteran's family. Supper hostesses will be Mrs. Carl Craft, Mrs. William Letson, Mrs. Lloyd Schultz and Mrs. Walter Schultz. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Abbey are commanders of the two groups.

Walter L. Abbey Services Tuesday

Walter L. Abbey of 1134 west Third street died Saturday at the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital at 71 years. Abbey was born at Adams and resided for a time in Blue Hill before coming to Hastings in 1939. He was employed at the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot for a number of years. He was a member of Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. Survivors are his wife Myrel; a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Roberts of St. Paul, Minn., and his brother and sister, John Abbey of Casper, Wyo., and Mrs. O. L. Babcock of Wymore. Services will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Butler-Volland Chapel with the Rev. Doyle Hays officiating. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery where military rites will be conducted by members of the VFW and American Legion. Memorials in Abbey's honor may be given to Grace EUB Church.


   

On September 22, 1966, Myrel C. Abbey applied for a military grave marker for her deceased husband.

Myrel G. Abbey

Former Hastings resident Myrel G. (Chaffin) Abbey, 96, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Community Care of Blue Hill. Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Abbey was born Aug. 24, 1901, to Thomas and Fannie (Chaplin) Chaffin in Cowles. On Sept. 3, 1919, she married Walter L. Abbey in Hastings. They moved to Hastings from Blue Hill in 1938. She was a homemaker. She was a former resident of Autumn Park Apartments. Her husband died Sept. 18, 1966. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, lifetime member of the Eagles Auxiliary, past state commander of DAV Auxiliary and was active in VFW Auxiliary. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Lois; one sister and three brothers. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Thomas Kingdon

Thomas Lynn Kingdon, 92, of Greeley died Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Bonell Good Samaritan Community, Greeley. He was born Oct. 15, 1913, on a farm in Long Lake Township near Traverse City, Mich., to Henry A. and Nellie J. (Page) Kingdon. On Oct. 27, 1942, he married Thelma D. (Sykes) Hughes in Elkton, Md. At the time of her death, they had been married 57 years. Mr. Kingdon attended grade school in Long Lake Township and high school and business school in Traverse City. He worked for the Farm Credit Administration in Traverse City and Lansing, Mich., and transferred to St. Paul, Minn. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve and served four years during World War II. In 1947, Mr. Kingdon went to work for Texaco Inc. in Minneapolis. He transferred to Denver in 1968 and retired after 29 years. He moved to Greeley in 1976. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Greeley and the American Association of Retired Persons. Survivors are his grandchildren, Susan E. (Hughes) Godel and her husband Kenneth Godel of South Berwick, Maine, James E. Hughes and wife Stephanie Daily of Minneapolis, Daniel E. Hughes and wife Jill of Eden Prairie, Minn.; four great-granddaughters, Laura, Sarah, Samantha and Emma; and special friends, Edna and Tom Webster. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepson, Jack Hughes, a brother, Robert H. Kingdon, and four sisters, Eva Riehl, Sadie A. Wilson, Edith Hodges and Jenny Hammond. Memorial services will be at a later date. Inurnment will be in Linn Grove Cemetery, Greeley. Memorial gifts may be made to Bonell Good Samaritan Community, 708 22nd St., Greeley, CO 80631.
