Mrs. Margaret A. Abbey

Final rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Park Boulevard Methodist church for Mrs. Margaret Ann Abbey, 89, who first came to San Diego in 1889. The Rev. Roy C. Mason, pastor of Park church, and the Rev. John Gabrielson, former pastor, will officiate, and burial will be in Greenwood Memorial park. Bonham Brother's mortuary is in charge. She died Monday in her home, 1740 Meade ave. Mrs. Abbey, a native of Ramsy, Isle of Man, lived here from 1889 to 1891. She returned later and had lived here continuously for 42 years. She was a charter member of Taylor Methodist church, now the Park church, which was dedicated in 1908. She would have celebrated her 90th birthday yesterday. Surviving are a son, Fred K. Garrett, of San Diego; three daughters, Mrs. Eunice Ward, of Solana Beach, and others in Portland and Santa Monica; five grandsons and two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bidwell is a member of the armed forces and is stationed in Texas. Mrs. Bidwell has been employed in Albany.

Death Takes S. A. Stubbs

Sheldon A. Stubbs Sr., 73, district circulation manager for The Oregonian, died Tuesday at Portland Sanitarium. Mr. Stubbs was born Dec. 6, 1886, in Delavan, Ill., and came to Portland in 1904. He led a busy and varied life, giving his attentions to scouting, youth groups, rock hounds stamp and coin collecting. In his younger years, he worked with various small newspapers, handling circulation, advertising and news reporting jobs. He had been with The Oregonian for 17 years. Survivors include his widow, Mary Elizabeth; two sons, Sheldon A. Stubbs Jr., and Robert O. Stubbs; a stepson, Kenneth W. Bunker; and a daughter, Mrs. Edward Christianson; 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at 1 p. m. at A. J. Rose Mortuary. Mr. Stubbs was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. He resided at 3279 SE Market St.

Death Claims John Bidwell

John D. Bidwell, 36, 315 S. Davidson, Albany, died Wednesday night in the Albany General Hospital as the result of a heart ailment. He was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Athens, Tenn. and lived there until moving to Albany in 1943. Bidwell was a veteran of the Korean War, having flown in the Air Force. Prior to his illness, he worked at the Vancouver Plywood as a veneer receiver. He was a member of the Albany Elks Lodge, No. 359. On Feb. 20, 1951, he married Virjean F. Allman Bidwell in Scio. In addition to his widow, he is survived by two daughters, Denise and Debbie, both of Albany; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Prois Underwood of Albany, and two brothers, Ray Bidwell of Albany and A. L. Bidwell of McChord Air Force Base, Tacoma, Wash. Final rites are set for 11 a.m. at the Fisher Funeral Home with Pastor Jack Dunaway officiating. Burial will be in Willamette Memorial Park.

Ronald Burgis

Ronald H. Burgis, 53, of Theresa, sales manager for the Baker Canning Co. at Theresa, died Sunday at St. Agnes Hospital after a short illness. Born Jan. 16, 1922, in Toronto, Canada, he was the son of  Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burgis. He married Vivian Bakerink at Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 1, 1963. Surviving are his widow; his mother of Canada; and a brother, C. W. Burgis of British Columbia, Canada. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Lomira. The Rev. Russell E. Miller will officiate, and burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Theresa. Visitation for Mr. Burgis will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Beck Funeral Home, Theresa, and at the church from noon Wednesday until the time of services.

MARY ELIZABETH STUBBS

Mary Elizabeth Stubbs, a longtime resident of the Portland area, died Monday in an Oregon City care center of causes related to age. At her request, no service will be held. Mrs. Stubbs was 97. She was born Nov. 12, 1894, in Belleville, Kan. Her maiden name was Abbey. She attended high school in San Diego and moved to Portland in 1926. Mrs. Stubbs was a homemaker. She had been a hostess for the Belmont Drop-In Center in Southeast Portland and served on the organization's board of directors for many years. A member of Central Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Stubbs taught Sunday school classes at the church for many years. Her husband of 39 years, Sheldon A. Stubbs, died in 1960. Mrs. Stubbs is survived by her sons, Robert of Nehalem and Sheldon A. of Beaverton; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Interment will be in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Gladstone Meals-on-Wheels program.

Willard Earl Hoover July 4, 1927 - Sept. 26, 2006

Willard Hoover, 79, of Albany took his last breath on earth and his first breath in heaven Tuesday. He was born in Toledo, the son of William Earl and LaVerne Wave (Crabtree) Hoover. He lived all of his life in the mid-valley. Willard served in the Navy during World War II, in Japan, Hawaii, Panama Canal and San Diego, Calif. His last assignment, on the USS Eager, was a meaningful time throughout his life. Willard married Virjean Allman Bidwell on Sept. 25, 1969, in Albany. He loved fishing and enjoyed the yearly fishing and camping trips at East Lake. He loved antiques and old cars. He was an old-car encyclopedia. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. After his retirement in 1990, he did landscaping for several clients. He attended North Albany Community Church. Willard is survived by wife, Virjean Hoover of Albany; children Rick Stubbs of Brentwood, Calif.; Marilyn Hale of Sweet Home, Dwayne Hoover of Albany, Dwight Hoover of Albany, Debbie Thomas of Keizer, Kevin Hoover of Sweet Home, Denise Martin of Albany, Chuck Hoover of Oceanside, Calif., Tim Hoover of Lebanon and Terry Hoover of Sweet Home; 30 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother Kenneth Hoover of Lebanon; and sisters Loraine Plagmann of Lebanon and Eda Ward of Stayton. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Fisher Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Willamette Community Church, 420 Third Ave. S.E., Albany.
