EARLY RESIDENT DEAD

The Waverly Republican gives particulars of the death of the aunt of W. O. Guy of this city as follows: "Another one of the earlier residents of Bremer county has passed away. Elizabeth Weber Guy was born in Cornwall, England, May 24, 1829, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Searle, in Waverly, Iowa, May 5, 1905. Thus in but a few more days she would have reached the age of 77. In September, 1850, she left her native land and came to America, making her home first at Sodas, New York. Here in April, 1852, she was united in marriage to William Kemp, who had also come from England. Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Kemp came west and after a few months' residence in Wisconsin they came to Bremer county, Iowa, and settled near what is now Plainfield. They experienced the hardships and endured the privations incident to pioneer life. Those were the days of the Indian, log house and often scanty provision for the table, but by hard work and faithful industry the family was provided for. Three children were born into the home, the youngest of whom, Mary, passed away 15 years ago this month. The other two, a son, Guy Kemp, of Seattle, Washington, and a daughter, Mrs. Jane Searle, of Waverly, Iowa, survive. Among other near relatives besides her husband, who for more than half a century journeyed with her and in her feeble condition did everything possible for her comfort, there remain two nephews, W. O. Guy, of Waterloo, and John Guy, of Cedar Rapids. Also five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Kemp was always rather frail of body, but her physical endurance was marvelous. She had failed perceptively in the last few years and for about two years has been blind. Her daughter has cared for her with all possible tenderness and solicitude for some years and for the last three months she has been in her daughter's home that her last days be made as comfortable as possible.
