He was born Oct. 10, 1927, in Graham County, the son of Andrew Sr. and Catherine Gerstner Appelhans. He was a custodian for USD 215, Lakin. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. On July 31, 1967, he married Easther M. GREEN at Ulysses. She survives. Other survivors include: two sons, Clarence "A.J.," Denton, Texas, Christopher W., Lakin; a brother, Marvin, Hastt, Colo., a sister, Olivia Lidwell, Joe, Pa.; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Elmer, Richard, Edmond, Julius "Red" and Eugene. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of Christ, Lakin, with Minister Kenne Whitham presiding. On Wednesday, December 4, 2019 the Lord heard Easther Mae Appelhans plea “Take my hand, Precious Lord and lead me home.” She was born on October 10, 1941 in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Harold L. Green & Alice Irene (Jenkins) Green, she grew up on the family farm NW of Lakin, Kansas, graduating from Lakin High school in 1959. She continued her education in Hutchinson, Kansas. She then moved to Greeley, Colorado for three years. She married Richard O. Miller in 1963. They had a son, Christopher Wayne. They later divorced. On July 31, 1967, she married Andrew Appelhans living in Lakin, KS. In 1971 Andy adopted Chris. Easther was a stay at home Mom for Several years, then worked as a bookkeeper; tax preparer for H & R Block; and as a Member Representative/Cashier at Golden Plains Credit Union in Lakin, retiring in 2001. In 2010 she moved to Garden City, Kansas and in 2015 she moved to Columbia, MO. with grandchildren Kevin Chaves and his 4 children. She enjoyed reading, painting, playing games, on her computer, and making quilts. She enjoyed visiting Kevin, and his children and keeping in touch with friends and family in Kansas and visiting her grandson Benjamin Corn in Jefferson City, Missouri. She is survived by her son, Christopher and wife Ruth Appelhans of Wichita, Kansas; Grandson, Kevin Chavez; three Great Grandsons, Seth, Cena, and Syrus; Two Great Granddaughters, Alison and Serenity; Grandson, Benjamin Corn; Sister-in-law Joyce of Oklahoma; several nieces and nephews in Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; Step son Clarence (A.J.); two brothers, Leonard Lee Green and Robert Duane Green; nephew Robert Daniel Green. Private graveside memorial services will take place at the Lakin Kansas Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Easther requested that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Diabetes Association in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home; 620 N. Main St., Garden City, Kansas 67846.
