No More Travels, 79-Year-Old Says

Day Thorsell says he's through with traveling. The 78-year-old Hayward resident, just returned from a seven-week visit to his native Sweden, says he "is getting too old" for such trips. "It was all right when I was 78", he explained "but I'm going to be 79 next week. Thorsell, of 22331 Princeton St., says, however, that his visit to Sweden is "something I didn't want to miss. The Hayward man left Sweden 58 years ago to come to California. How has Sweden changed in those 58 years? Thorsell says the difference is prosperity, with everyone having "enough to live like people should."

SOCIAL SECURITY

"They have three kinds of social security," the active senior citizen added. Thorsell's journey, which started June 7 and ended in September, included a "first Time" look at New York City, a complete tour of his native land and even a bomb scare. "The bomb scare was in New York when I was coming home, Thorsell said." They made us unpack all our luggage. The Hayward resident said he took the scare in stride, however. "I'm getting too old to get excited." he commented. Thorsell said Sweden is "about the same" as the United States. "It was a poor nation when I left," he added. At 78, Thorsell can tell prospective travelers how many steps there to the top of the Statue of Liberty. He also will recall, if asked, how many steps in the tower of Stockholm's city hall, or how many locks on Sweden's many canals.

FACTS RECORDED

Any facts he can't remember about the trip are recorded in notebooks, included in pamphlets and books he has collected or recalled via boxes of photographs. "I brought all these things home so this trip would last more than seven weeks, he says. Thorsell says that, of the two nations, he still prefers his adopted land. He said he explained it all to Swedish newspapermen who asked the question, by pointing out he is "Americanized and climatized to Hayward, Calif. "Besides," added Thorsell, "I can't speak Swedish anymore."
