Carrol Dean 'Mac" McCrea

POCATELLO - Carrol Dean McCrea, known to all as "Mac," died in peace at his home in Pocatello January 18, 2000 after an extended illness. He was born in Gooding, Idaho December 10, 1934 to Melvin and Opal, who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Those two ribbons of steel and more, particularly the wooden poles strung with wires running beside them, would dictate most of his life. He began schooling in Gooding, Idaho, and as the railroad moved the family he attended a one-room school in Delaplain, Nevada, which was only a few miles from modern Jackpot, (and) was home to only about six families, but had lots of Jackrabbits. During the years there Carrol burnt the barrel out of his Winchester .22 and enjoyed a young boy's paradise, learning to love hunting and fishing. On many occasions Carrol heard his name called to come and shoot the rattlesnakes that had crawled into the outhouse. But maybe the highlight of Delaplain life was his pet bobcat that finally tore up so many dogs that he let him loose. Because Delaplain had only eight grades of school he moved to Filer (Idaho) to stay with his Aunt Marie to attend high school. Later the family moved to Bellevue, Idaho, where he graduated from high school. Carrol started working for the UPRR right out of school, and worked as a signal maintainer across Idaho, with several years in Kemmerer, Wyoming. during the 14 years of UPRR service his two sons, Russell and Wally, were born. After the loss of his sight in 1967, he lived in Boise at the Blind Commission and later in Arkansas and Idaho Falls, where he completed training for the blind, graduating from Culinary Arts School in Idaho Falls. Eventually he settled in Pocatello, his favorite haunt. The highlight of his days were his walks downtown to socialize with his many friends and acquaintances. During the last four years of his life his youngest son, Wally, dutifully cared for him in their joint home. Carrol was preceded in death by his Parents, Melvin H. "Mac" and Opal L. McCrea. He is survived by his two sons, Russel and wife Cathy McCrea of Meridian, Wally McCrea of Pocatello; his sister, Dotty and husband Hal Mulligan of Boise; and several grandchildren and nephews.
