He was born in Ireland, County Leitrum, August 31,1798 so that he was at his death nearly 91 years of age. He leaves seven children, thirty grand children, and one great grandchild. He was the father of Mrs. K. McCrimmon and Mrs. D. McLeod of Oakland and Mr. James Grogan of Benicia. One son resides in New York, two in Canada and one in Ireland. He came to Oakland in 1871 and has been a faithful member of St. John's Episcopal Church. The funeral services were conducted on Friday by Rev. Benjamin Ackerly, assisted by Rev. H.H. Rice. He wa burried beside his grand daughter Maggie McCrimmon, who died May 4, age 16. Mr. Grogan was a good citizen, a loving father and an earnest Christian. He died peacefully and in a ripe old age, and ere his death, like a true Bible patriarch, he laid his hand upon the head of each of his children and grandchildren living in California, and took his little great grandchild in his aarms and gave them all his parting blessing. It was a hallowed scence, never to be forgotten by the family. May they all be so blessed to meet him in Heaven.
Mrs. Isabelle Grogan passed away in Sacramento last Monday afternoon. She was suddenly taken ill the Friday previous with an intestinal disorder, and the only hopes lay in a surgical operation, she was removed to the hospital Sunday evening. The operation was performed early Monday morning, but owing to her age and general weakness she failed to rally and death ensued at the time mentioned. The deceased, who maiden name was Isabella Morrison, was born in Ireland, March 16, 1840. After leaving her native land, she lived for several years in Boston, and then came to San Francisco, where on February 11, 1874, she was united in marriage with James Grogan. Over a quarter of a century ago the couple took up their residence in Benecia, and here they raised their family, consisting of three daughters and a son. Mr. Grogan preceded his wife to the great beyond by a number of years, since which time she has been comforted with the love and devotion of her children, whom now grieve over the loss of a mother who embraced all the noblest and truest virtues of that calling. Her life was filled with deeds of kindness, for in a sweet, retiring way she occupied her time in brightening the lot of those around her. She was a devout Christian, having always faithfully adhered to the precepts of the Episcopal church. Besides her children-Mrs. Thomas King, Mrs. M. Harrington, Miss Margaret Grogan and Robert Grogan-she leaves three sisters and a brother in Massachusetts. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Isaac Dawson in St. Paul's church Wednesday afternoon, after which all that is mortal of the departed was laid away in the family plot in the Benecia cemetery.
