David Anthony Montrond died April 11, 1961, in Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., CA, at age 28. Buried in Santa Rosa Odd Fellows Cemetery, Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., CA.

The Press Democrat, Santa Rose, Sonoma Co., CA, Wednesday, April 12, 1961

Man Calls Sister, Then Kills Self

A 28-year-old Santa Rosa man telephoned his sister yesterday, instructed her to send sheriff's deputies to the Willowside Bride, then shot himself there with a high-powered rifle. David Anthony Montrond took his own life while his sister, Mrs. Lillian Alves, 1757 Willowside rd., the first one to reach him, hurried to the bridge in hopes of preventing the suicide. "He was already dead when I got there," Mrs. Alves said. Sheriff's deputies said he shot himself in the chest with a 30-40 rifle which he borrowed from his brother, William Montrond, Santa Rosa, on the pretense he was going hunting. Deputies found two suicide notes in  his pocket - one to Mrs. Alves and the other to his mother, Mrs. Olinda Montrond, 1749 Willowside rd. Mrs. Alves said Mr. Montrond, who had been separated from his wife, Laurine Montrond, 525 Earle st., for about a year and had been working in Ukiah, arrived at his mother's home yesterday. "He only stayed a little while," Mrs. Alves said. "He bid us and his two daughters goodbye then borrowed the rifle. He said he was going hunting. "A short while later, he called me and asked me to do him a favor. He told me to call the deputies and then tell them to go to the bridge." Mrs. Alves said she called the sheriff's office then rushed to the bridge, located on Willowside rd., and found Mr. Montrond's body on the side of the road. Mrs. Alves said the two suicide notes left no clues concerning the reason for the suicide. "He had been worried about his business, though," Mrs. Alves said. Mr. Montrond had been engaged in the wood burling business for himself in Ukiah a short time. He was born and lived most of his life in Santa Rosa. He was graduated from Santa Rosa High School. He is also survived by his father, Antone Montrond, Santa Rosa; another sister, Rebecca Rodrigues, Santa Rosa, and his daughters, Margo, 8, and Tina Marie, 5, both of Santa Rosa. Funeral services are being arranged at the Welto Chapel of the Roses.

Resident Killed In Crash Which Took 4 Lives

Lloyd E. Higgins Victim of Brown County Collision

The toll of the bloody weekend on Wisconsin highways included Lloyd E. Higgins, 44, 608 S. Ash Ave., who died in a Brown County accident Saturday afternoon which snuffed out the lives of all four persons involved. They died in a head-on crash of two autos at the intersection of Highways 29 and 32, and a town road, 7 miles west of Green Bay, at 4:14 p. m. Higgins was alone in his car. Victims in the other vehicle were all members of a rural Oneida family - Eastman Skenadore, 53; his wife, Lucille, 49, and a son, Gordon, 7. Authorities said all four died instantly. They theorized the Skenadore car might have been making a left turn onto the town road when the crash occurred, since the family home was in that direction. Skenadore's car was driven backward about 200 feet from the point of impact. There is a small rise at the point of the crash which the Marshfield man's vehicle climbed before reaching the intersection. The Skenadore had two other children, whom authorities reported had been left in the care of an aunt for the day. Funeral services for Lloyd E. Higgins will be held at the Hansen Funeral Home here at 10 a. m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Douglas P. Oyan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Walnut Hill cemetery in Baraboo. Higgins was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Baraboo and graduated from the Baraboo High School in 1938. He entered the armed forces in 1940, serving about four years, after which he was employed at Badger Ordinance Works. He later moved to Wisconsin Rapids, where he worked for five years. Since coming to Marshfield, he had been employed by the Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company as a claims adjuster. Higgins was a member of the United Commercial Travelers. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Higgins of Marshfield. A sister died in infancy. The Past Presidents Parley of the American Legion Auxiliary will meet at the funeral home this evening at 7:30 o'clock, to pay their respects.
