Dear Mr. Larson,

I stumbled across your website and careful genealogical work while researching land ownership in early Clay County, Minnesota. The very earliest General Land Office patents in the county were issued on April 16, 1961 to a group of "half-breeds of mixed bloods of the Dacotah or Sioux Nations of Indians." Among those receiving land grants were multiple members of one family:

--Eliza Altenburg
--Frederick S Altenburg
--Margaret M Altenburg
--Mary A Altenburg

(see Bureau of Land Management's GLO records: https://glorecords.blm.gov/results/default.aspx?searchCriteria=type=patent|st=MN|cty=027 )|sp=true|sw=true|sadv=false#resultsTabIndex=0&page=1&sortField=11&sortDir=0

Judging from your work at http://www.leighlarson.com/jonathan_william_altenburg.htm, these individuals  are very likely the family of one of your ancestors, Jonathan William Altenburg (son of Daniel David Altenburg).

What I cannot figure out is who actually took possession of the land -- I  can find no evidence that Altenburgs actually farmed or used the land in any way for themselves. Others have suspected that the ultimate recipients of the land were land speculators or perhaps the Hudson's Bay Company which had a trading post at the newly established Georgetown, also in Clay County, MN.

I wondered if you might have come across any records concerning Jonathan William Altenburg's employment in his early Minnesota days up to 1861, when the land transactions were made. Did he perhaps work for some land company (such as the nearby Lafayette Company) or large trading firm such as Hudson's Bay Company? The land his wife and children received patent for in '61 amounted to hundreds of acres but I have so far found no records of his business in the area.

Thanks for sharing all your research at http://www.leighlarson.com -- it's been a big help. I'm very happy to share all I've found on the Altenburgs which, so far, is rather meager.

Best wishes,

Patrick Lanaghan
