BURNED THE HOUSE
James Gilby, of This City, Loses a House in Canada.
James Gilby, of this city, recently purchased a large farm in the Northwest Territory, about one hundred miles west of Brandon, and went up there last week to take possession, while Mrs. Gilby and a younger son took up furniture for their new home intending to get it in a readiness for the coming of the remainder of the family. The party from whom he purchased the house had not moved out yet on their arrival, and Mr. Gilby, after getting his furniture into the house, pitched into the farm work. In taking down the stove while moving out, the former owner accidentally set fire to the kitchen. The fire was soon beyond control and the house burned to the ground, together with both Mr. Gilby's furniture and that of the former owner as well. Nothing was saved. Mr. Gilby, who was plowing in the field a mile away when his attention was attracted to the blaze, found little but ashes to greet him on his arrival after a hurried run to the house. He thought it rather a warm reception for a cold country, but had the house partially insured. He lost considerable clothing besides the furniture. Moral: Insure in the Holmes-Leidman Agency.
