TIMELINE

Hugh Allen Bickett and Inez Kate Boyce moved to Odell, Nebraska in 1884. Clarence Arthur died from diphtheria when he was two years old. There was a flood in 1888 and two of their children drowned. Kate was carrying baby Clara. Six year old Lawrence Earl and four year old Effie Pearl were holding on to her skirts when they were swept away by the flood waters. In 1892 they moved to Woodruff, Kansas where Hugh lived until his death. Because of health problems related to hardening of the arteries, Kate went to stay with her daughter Ida Bickett Cooley in Casper Wyoming and passed away while living there. Hugh bought young cattle and fed them, then sold them when the market was high. Hugh was of Irish descent and Kate was of German descent. Hugh was almost 82 when he died from a stroke. He chewed tobacco and when he got excited his jaws went a mile a minute. According to stories told, one time he became real grouchy and wouldn't talk to any of the family. They didn't know what was wrong with him. That went on for several days and finally they found out that he had quit chewing tobacco and was suffering. Hugh did lots of walking, always with his hands behind his back. One hand holding the wrist of the other hand. Once or twice a year he would walk the 2 1/2 miles out to the farm and walk around checking crops and then to the house before going home. He owned the farm where all four of Carl's children were born and also owned a house in Woodruff where they lived.

Sad Accident at Odell.

Last Saturday night at about ten o'clock, during the severe rain storm which flooded the valley of Indian creek, the family of Hugh Bickett became frightened and attempted to go to a neighbors. Mr. Bickett was not at home at the time and his wife set out with her five children, one a babe, for a safer place away from the rising waters. The water covered the entire road and fields and it was storming fearfully. Between their house and their neighbor's was a low place in the road several rods long, which was covered by flowing water. In endeavoring to pass this, two of the children were drowned. The mother with her babe in her arms, and the other children clung to weeds and so managed to keep footing until rescued by the assistance of neighbors who were attracted to the spot by their screams. The children drowned were a boy, five years, and a girl, under three. The body of the latter was found Sunday afternoon and that of the boy Monday morning. The funeral services will take place today. Mr. Bicket lived on the farm of J. Oliver about a mile southeast of Odell. It is said this was the heaviest rainfall ever known in that locality.
