Before that, Mr. Hicks was an advertising executive with Time magazine and Life magazine during the 1930s. During World War I, Mr. Hicks was a slide trombonist in the U.S. Navy Band. That band was at that time under the direction of John Philip Sousa, the composer and band leader. He was a trombonist and violin player in dance bands in Chicago during the 1920s. He married the former Elizabeth Junge in 1946 in Cleveland and since then had spent summers on Squirrel Island, a community of about 100 summer homes in the town of Southport. He was president for 15 years of the Squirrel Island Chapel Association and a longtime volunteer fire chief. In 1993, he and his wife donated a new fire truck to the island. ``He was devoted to the island,'' said Elizabeth Draper, a longtime friend who was an organist at Squirrel Island Chapel. ``He was our oldest resident. Until recently he would always meet the boat (from Boothbay Harbor), and know who came on and who was leaving.'' Mr. Hicks enjoyed photography and used his camera to record many of the people and events of Squirrel Island. He often gave slide shows at the island's town hall, showing his pictures of the island as well those taken during his many world travels. ``They were called Hicks' Flicks,'' said Draper. ``He took pictures of the hurricanes and the fires, anything that happened on the island. It was a vast collection.'' While in New York City, Mr. Hicks was active in the 1948 Republican presidential campaign of Gov. Thomas E. Dewey. He was active with the Cleveland Symphony, the Cleveland Skating Club, Western Reserve Historical Society and various musical organizations. He lived in Shaker Heights, Ohio, before moving in 1971 to White River Junction, Vt. He moved to Cape Elizabeth in 1983, where he was active member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church. Born in Owosso, Mich., he was a son of George and Florence Guerin Hicks. He graduated from Owosso High School and in 1922 from the University of Michigan. A daughter, Ro-Anne Hicks Bonion, died previously. Surviving is his wife of Cape Elizabeth and Squirrel Island. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. July 9 at Squirrel Island Chapel. The Rev. Audrey S. Delafield of St. Alban's Episcopal Church will officiate. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, Bath.
