Viola church fetes 62-year volunteer
VIOLA, Wis. - It was like any other Sunday morning, at first, for Cora Wheeler. She was up at the usual time and off at the appointed hour to the United Methodist Church, where she had served a variety of volunteer positions - from church organist (starting in 1915 on the piano) to Sunday school teacher and superintendant. She took the usual route in her 1952 Buick to the white, frame church, and the service began as usual. But at the point a "prayer of confession" was listed, three members of the congregation walked to the front of the church, sat down around a table and began to discuss events in the life of Cora Wheeler. "It's Cora Wheeler Day," announced Mae Matthew, one of the trio. A piano struck up a tune, the 167 persons in attendance rose to their feet, and, amidst applause, an usher escorted Mrs. Wheeler to the front. She received flowers, and The Happy Notes, a youth quartet, sang a song composed by church organist Jeneen Reed for the event. The day's sermon related generosity with which Mrs. Wheeler, 84, had served the church. And written tributes by those who had known her through the years told how her faith and concern for others had helped them. Besides gratifying her, the surprise celebration had also piqued her curiosity. Asked Mrs. Wheeler: "How could so many in Viola keep a secret so long?"
