MAN DENIES PARENTAGE OF CHILD IN TRIAL HERE
Denying that he is the father of a nine-year-old daughter, Charles Plumtree Thursday morning took the stand in his own defense when he went on trial in superior court on a charge of failure to provide for the minor child. His former wife, Nellie H. Plumtree, of Woodland, emphatically denied that she had made statements to the effect that Plumtree was not the father of her child which was born four years after their marriage. She asserted that Plumtree had not contributed to the support of the child for more than a year. The trial got underway quickly with the first 12 persons called into the jury box being accepted by District Attorney Neal Chalmers and defense attorneys. Witnesses for the defense, who testified that the former Mrs. Plumtree had asserted in their presence that the child was not Charles Plumtree's and testified to Plumtree's character were Thomas Evely, Aubrey N. Wisher, Gladys Beckman, Chris Beckman and Plumtree's present wife, Ada M. Plumtree. Indications were that the case would be submitted to the jury late Thursday afternoon. Those serving as juror are Jerry Jackisch, Charles H. Vosburgh, Percy T. Foster, M. O. Wyatt, Verna Hiatt, John Glavin, Christian A. Bielefield, Gerald Lewis, Joseph F. Koebel, Joseph D. Lord, John Jacobson and Oswald H. Broesch.
