MISS EMELINE BLAKE

DIED AT THE HOME OF F. D. BEYER

At Six o'clock Last Evening After a Very Brief Illness - A Life Full of Helpfulness Laid Down to be Again Taken up.

To Mr. F. D. Beyer we are indebted for the following words in regard to Miss Emeline Blake, sister of Mrs. F. D. Beyer, who died at their home on Glen avenue Sunday evening at six o'clock. "Miss Emeline Blake, the subject of this sketch, known among her relatives as "Aunt Emma," was born in the State of Maryland on the 10th day of February, 1818. Some twenty years of her life were spent in the home of James M. Snowden, and the last twelve years of her life have been spent in our home. Her age at the time of her death, March 3d, 1889, was seventy-one years and twenty-one days. It is so common to eulogise the dead that when the really virtuous die their praise seems meaningless. We are not disposed to speak of the faults of the dead, but I here declare, after more than thirty years' acquaintance with Aunt Emma (having her constantly in our family for more than twelve years past) that she had no faults. Her life was pure; her words were words of kindness, words of love, words of cheer, words of sympathy; they flowed from a pure heart. If she ever spoke an ugly word I never heard of it; if she ever did a really unkind act I never knew of it. Much might be said of her helpful, useful life and christian character. She had a sound mind in a sound body and in her sphere exerted the most wholesome influence upon all who came in contact with her. For three score years she had been useful, helpful and happy. No wonder her nephews and nieces loved her so much; no wonder they everywhere, in common with all who knew her, met her with a smile, for she always brought a smile for them, and by continued acts of kindness she manifested the tenderest love and sympathy for all. But she has gone. She will kneel at our family altar no more. She will sit by the window no more perusing the word of God. We shall, I fear, miss her very much. She seemed to be always happy. A life such as she lived could not be other than happy, for doubtless there was constant peace between God and her soul. I thank God for her life and example in our home." Miss Blake has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for over half a century. That her life was not one of mere profession, but that she walked with God has been well and tenderly told by Mr. Beyer. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence of F. D. Beyer this evening at five o'clock and tomorrow morning at 7:35 o'clock the remains will be taken to Petersburg for interment.
