BIGAMY.

Wife No. 2 Sends Her Fraudulent Husband to Jail.

A good many centuries ago, a worthy gentleman named Mr. David, celebrated for his writings, discovered that the heart of man was deceitful, and that in its unregenerate state the world was given to lying. Either Alexander O. Young, who was arrested by Detective Walsh yesterday, for bigamy, is a very much abused individual, or else he is the champion liar. In either case the woman who bears his name finds herself in a place decidedly awkward. On the 20th of last February, Young wooed and won the heart and hand of a maiden named Amanda Larson, who resided with her relatives in this city. Recently she discovered that she is not the only woman who bore his name, and that in short he had a wife residing in Michigan. As nearly as could be ascertained a few years ago he married a widow lady residing in an interior town of Michigan. At that time it is said he sailed under the name of Oleson. Becoming weary of his spouse he deserted her and came to St. Paul. Here he was formerly a bartender in an East Fourth street saloon, and it was here he met Miss Larson. On making the discovery that wife No. 1 resided in Michigan, No. 2 swore out a warrant for his arrest. He was brought before Judge Burr, pleaded guilty, waived examination, and was committed in default of $750 bail.

Alexander O. "Axel" Young (a/k/a John L. Olson) deserted Amanda Albertina (Larson) Olson before June, 1884.

COURT CHIPS.

Amanda Young is now known as Amanda Larson, and she seemingly wants a still further alteration in her name, or rather asks the district court to decide" where is she at?" She has made an application for divorce from Axel Young, who is sometimes known as John Olson and in some places is called J. L. Oleson. They were married at Minneapolis Feb. 28, 1884, under the names of Amanda Larson and Axel Young. In May of the same year the supposed husband was indicted in St. Paul, under the name of J. L. Oleson, charging polygamy. It is claimed that he married Anna M. Johnson in 1874 in Marquette county, Michigan, and that this wife was still living and not divorced when he married the plaintiff to this action. The man with the aliases was sentenced to the penitentiary for three years by Judge Brill in 1884 upon conviction of polygamy.

The Saint Paul Daily Globe, Saint Paul, Ramsey Co., MN, Tuesday, January 10, 1893

Judge John W. Willis tried two misfit cases yesterday, and decided that the wife in each case is entitled to be divorced from husbands who failed in the observance of marital vows. In one case it was Amanda Young who was freed from Axel Young, who has sometimes been known as John L. Olson and sometimes as John Young. He lived only a year with Amanda, and has since served a term in the penitentiary. He was charged with being the husband of other living wives from whom he had not been legally divorced. Amanda will hereafter be known as Amanda Larson.

The Saint Paul Daily Globe, Saint Paul, Ramsey Co., MN, Wednesday, January 11, 1893

Two divorce cases were taken up by Judge Egan yesterday. James W. Davis was granted an absolute divorce from Bertha Davis because of willful desertion for more than three years. The other divorce case was but partly heard, and went over to the next term for lack of proof as to infidelity. This is the case of Amanda Young against Axel Young.
